Data corruption is the damage of information caused by various software or hardware fails. The moment a file gets damaged, it will no longer work properly, so an application will not start or shall give errors, a text file will be partially or completely unreadable, an archive file will be impossible to open and then unpack, etc. Silent data corruption is the process of data getting harmed without any identification by the system or an administrator, that makes it a significant problem for hosting servers as problems are very likely to happen on bigger hard disk drives where significant volumes of information are placed. When a drive is a part of a RAID and the data on it is copied on other drives for redundancy, it is very likely that the bad file will be treated as an ordinary one and it'll be duplicated on all drives, making the damage permanent. Lots of the file systems which operate on web servers nowadays often cannot locate corrupted files instantly or they need time-consuming system checks during which the server isn't operational.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Shared Website Hosting
The integrity of the data which you upload to your new shared website hosting account shall be guaranteed by the ZFS file system which we take advantage of on our cloud platform. The majority of web hosting providers, like our company, use multiple hard disks to keep content and because the drives work in a RAID, identical data is synchronized between the drives all of the time. In case a file on a drive becomes corrupted for reasons unknown, however, it's likely that it will be copied on the other drives because other file systems do not include special checks for that. Unlike them, ZFS uses a digital fingerprint, or a checksum, for each file. In the event that a file gets damaged, its checksum won't match what ZFS has as a record for it, so the damaged copy will be substituted with a good one from a different drive. As this happens instantly, there's no risk for any of your files to ever get damaged.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you go for one of our semi-dedicated server plans, you will not need to worry about silent file corruption since we use ZFS - a high level file system which keeps track of all of the files in real time. Every time you upload a file to your hosting account, ZFS will assign a unique digital fingerprint to it - the so-called checksum. The file will be synchronized between several NVMe drives for redundancy, so if one drive fails, the other ones will take control. ZFS compares the checksum of all of the copies on the different drives and when it detects a damaged copy, it replaces it with a healthy one from a different drive. This happens instantly, so there will be no risk for any part of your content at any moment. In contrast, all the other file systems execute checks only after a system breakdown, but since they don't use anything similar to the checksums which ZFS uses, they cannot detect silently corrupted files, so a corrupted copy could be replicated on the rest of the drives as well and you can lose critical information. Because this is not the case with ZFS, we are able to guarantee the integrity of each and every file you upload no matter what.
